In-Season Goalie Development Program Groups
Location: Southdale CC & University of Manitoba (Wayne Fleming Arena)
This program offers an opportunity for in-season goalie specific development. Byron has put together different programs for each group that run the course of the season. Each group will focus on developing a series of important goalie specific skills for that age group, that might be otherwise forgotten during the hockey season.
Excited to announce that for 2026-27 there are even MORE session time and date options to choose from!
A calendar will be sent out upon registration to fill out and return to Byron to make the date/time selection as smooth as possible.
This year there will be 2 types of sessions:
1) Tuesdays - Skating ONLY sessions - these sessions will be 1 hour of skating and edgework focus. They will also include a puck handling component at some skates. These sessions will be led by Byron personally and capped at a smaller number of goalies. We ran some of these consistently throughout the summer and really saw the improvements in the goalies by the end of the summer. While goalies can be weary of a session with no shots - we highly recommend these!
2) Wednesdays and Sundays - Tactical/Skill Sessions - our classic session with a combination of skating and station work in the creases throughout the rink.
Every shooting/tactical session will have an emphasis on the foundations of the position, including some basic edgework, positioning, and depth control, however each month or two will we will cycle through a more in-depth focus on these various skills:
- Edgework, General Skating Ability & Tracking (includes screens & deflections)
- Butterfly Sliding & Backside Pushing
- Postwork (RVH) & Puck Handling

Q: How do I register?
A: Once you click “Register Now!" and fill out the registration. Within 1-2 days, you’ll receive a follow-up email with a fillable program calendar. You’ll fill it out with your selection of dates and return it to Byron to secure your session selections.
Q: What if I’m not sure how many sessions my goalie will be able to attend?
A: No problem! When you register, you’ll select the package that best fits your ideal schedule. We know every family’s hockey calendar is busy, so there is flexibility to adjust if things change. The packages are designed to give you options — whether you want a smaller block of sessions or more consistent development throughout the season.
Q: Can I mix and match dates from different days/locations?
A: Yes! You can choose any combination of sessions across the dates, times, locations for your goalie's age group that best fit your schedule.
Q: Do I have to pick all my sessions up front?
A: No. You’ll receive a calendar after registration to choose your preferred sessions. You can return it promptly, or if you need flexibility, you can coordinate with Byron as the season progresses (subject to availability - sessions will fill up!).
Q: What if I need to miss a session? Can I reschedule?
A: We understand conflicts happen! If you notify Byron in advance, we’ll do our best to accommodate a switch into another available session. Same day cancellation/reschedule requests won't be accommodated.
Q: Can my U9 goalie join the U11 program?
A: Possibly! U9 goalies should contact Byron directly to discuss readiness and fit for the program.

While the coaches are working on systems with the rest of the team, Byron will take the goalies and run them through goalie specific drills.

This program offers an opportunity for in-season goalie specific development. Byron has put together different programs for each group that run the course of the season. Each group will focus on developing a series of important goalie specific skills for that age group, that might be otherwise forgotten during the hockey season.

Byron offers winter and spring team goalie coaching to ensure your goalie stays sharp all year long! This allows your goalie the opportunity to improve on their specific abilities during the winter and spring seasons.
Often, coaches will run a “split practice” - meaning the forwards, defencemen and goalies are separated to focus on position-specific skills.
While the coaches are working on systems with the rest of the team, Byron will take the goalies and run them through goalie specific drills.
Most recently during the Winter 2017-18 season, Byron provided goalie coaching for the following teams:

Location: Southdale CC & University of Manitoba (Wayne Fleming Arena)
This program offers an opportunity for in-season goalie specific development. Byron has put together different programs for each group that run the course of the season. Each group will focus on developing a series of important goalie specific skills for that age group, that might be otherwise forgotten during the hockey season.
Excited to announce that for 2026-27 there are even MORE session time and date options to choose from!
A calendar will be sent out upon registration to fill out and return to Byron to make the date/time selection as smooth as possible.
This year there will be 2 types of sessions:
1) Tuesdays - Skating ONLY sessions - these sessions will be 1 hour of skating and edgework focus. They will also include a puck handling component at some skates. These sessions will be led by Byron personally and capped at a smaller number of goalies. We ran some of these consistently throughout the summer and really saw the improvements in the goalies by the end of the summer. While goalies can be weary of a session with no shots - we highly recommend these!
2) Wednesdays and Sundays - Tactical/Skill Sessions - our classic session with a combination of skating and station work in the creases throughout the rink.
Every shooting/tactical session will have an emphasis on the foundations of the position, including some basic edgework, positioning, and depth control, however each month or two will we will cycle through a more in-depth focus on these various skills:
- Edgework, General Skating Ability & Tracking (includes screens & deflections)
- Butterfly Sliding & Backside Pushing
- Postwork (RVH) & Puck Handling

Byron offers winter and spring team goalie coaching to ensure your goalie stays sharp all year long! This allows your goalie the opportunity to improve on their specific abilities during the winter and spring seasons.
Often, coaches will run a “split practice” - meaning the forwards, defencemen and goalies are separated to focus on position-specific skills.
While the coaches are working on systems with the rest of the team, Byron will take the goalies and run them through goalie specific drills.
Most recently during the Winter 2017-18 season, Byron provided goalie coaching for the following teams:

This program offers an opportunity for in-season goalie specific development. Byron has put together different programs for each group that run the course of the season. Each group will focus on developing a series of important goalie specific skills for that age group, that might be otherwise forgotten during the hockey season.
Excited to announce that for 2026-27 there are even MORE session time and date options to choose from!
A calendar will be sent out upon registration to fill out and return to Byron to make the date/time selection as smooth as possible.
This year there will be 2 types of sessions:
1) Tuesdays - Skating ONLY sessions - these sessions will be 1 hour of skating and edgework focus. They will also include a puck handling component at some skates. These sessions will be led by Byron personally and capped at a smaller number of goalies. We ran some of these consistently throughout the summer and really saw the improvements in the goalies by the end of the summer. While goalies can be weary of a session with no shots - we highly recommend these!
2) Wednesdays and Sundays - Tactical/Skill Sessions - our classic session with a combination of skating and station work in the creases throughout the rink.
Every shooting/tactical session will have an emphasis on the foundations of the position, including some basic edgework, positioning, and depth control, however each month or two will we will cycle through a more in-depth focus on these various skills:
- Edgework, General Skating Ability & Tracking (includes screens & deflections)
- Butterfly Sliding & Backside Pushing
- Postwork (RVH) & Puck Handling

Program FAQ:
Q: How do I register?
A: Once you click “Register Now!" and fill out the registration. Within 1-2 days, you’ll receive a follow-up email with a fillable program calendar. You’ll fill it out with your selection of dates and return it to Byron to secure your session selections.
Q: What if I’m not sure how many sessions my goalie will be able to attend?
A: No problem! When you register, you’ll select the package that best fits your ideal schedule. We know every family’s hockey calendar is busy, so there is flexibility to adjust if things change. The packages are designed to give you options — whether you want a smaller block of sessions or more consistent development throughout the season.
Q: Can I mix and match dates from different days/locations?
A: Yes! You can choose any combination of sessions across the dates, times, locations for your goalie's age group that best fit your schedule.
Q: Do I have to pick all my sessions up front?
A: No. You’ll receive a calendar after registration to choose your preferred sessions. You can return it promptly, or if you need flexibility, you can coordinate with Byron as the season progresses (subject to availability - sessions will fill up!).
Q: What if I need to miss a session? Can I reschedule?
A: We understand conflicts happen! If you notify Byron in advance, we’ll do our best to accommodate a switch into another available session. Same day cancellation/reschedule requests won't be accommodated.
Q: Can my U9 goalie join the U11 program?
A: Possibly! U9 goalies should contact Byron directly to discuss readiness and fit for the program.
